GUELPH ? Childhood obesity has been identified as a problem for many years, yet despite the best efforts of parents, child care workers, schools, doctors, nurses and public health, the rates of overweight and obesity are on the rise. Nicola Mercer, Medical Officer of Health with Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health, presented a report on the issue at Wednesdays board of health meeting. They will be prone to heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, some cancers, liver and gallbladder disease, infertility and osteoarthritis as well as depression and other mental health conditions when they get older. Rita Sethi, director of community health and disease prevention, acknowledged that schools must now conform to the new School Food and Beverage Policy, but this is only one approach to healthy eating. Health Canada recommends infants be breastfed until at least six months of age and according to prenatal surveys, 90 per cent of local pregnant women indicate that they intend to breastfeed. However, 40 per cent of infants in Wellington, Dufferin and Guelph had been bottle-fed before being discharged from hospital and by eight weeks, more than 20 per cent of those who had initiated breastfeeding had stopped.
