McConnell?s floor flip-flop could cost GOP

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell was for a vote to grant the president power to hike the debt limit before he was against it.

Within a matter of hours on Thursday, the Republican leader was furiously backpedaling from his own move to force a vote on President Obama?s request for unlimited future borrowing authority. McConnell demanded such a vote in the morning, but by afternoon Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., had called his counterpart?s bluff and pressed for an up-or-down vote himself.

?I object,? said McConnell, R-Ky.

It was a rare strategic misstep for a man often described as one of the Senate?s most guiling tacticians. In a week of posturing and positioning on Capitol Hill, people on both sides of the aisle acknowledged that McConnell?s failed maneuver cost the GOP some precious negotiating ground. The question was how much.

The debt ceiling is widely believed to be Republicans? strongest point of leverage in the ongoing fiscal-cliff negotiations. Although technically not part of the package of automatic spending cuts and tax hikes that will go into place on Jan. 1, Congress is expected to need to approve new borrowing authority by late winter. President Obama wants to avoid a repeat of the protracted fight that brought the nation to the brink of default in the summer of 2011 and caused the country to lose its AAA-credit rating.

?I will not play that game,? Obama said on Wednesday.

Many Republicans privately believe that even if they ultimately must fold on raising taxes on the wealthy, as the president has demanded, they could still wring spending and entitlement concessions out of the White House and congressional Democrats in a debt-ceiling fight.

Democrats insisted that McConnell?s blunder on Thursday showed that the politics of the debt ceiling have shifted substantively since 2011, when Democratic politicians feared being tagged as profligate spenders in the wake of the tea party-dominated 2010 elections.

?He hasn?t learned that this is not 2010 anymore. There?s no hay to be made by playing politics with the debt limit. So Senator McConnell?s usually very astute political radar was off today. And I would argue it?s because they?re sort of losing ground on the whole fiscal-cliff argument,? Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., gleefully told reporters on Thursday.

After the 2011 fight, approval ratings for both congressional Republicans and the president plunged. A new Quinnipiac poll released on Thursday showed that the public now trusts Obama and Democrats more than congressional Republicans in negotiations to avoid the fiscal cliff--by a 53 percent to 36 percent margin.

Reid suggested that Democrats weren?t done pushing to grant the president unilateral authority to raise the borrowing limit. ?I will continue to seek an agreement to hold an up-or-down vote on his proposal to avoid another debt-ceiling debacle,? Reid said in a statement after the floor dustup.

He complained that Republicans were ?not taking yes for an answer.?

Republicans remained dubious that Reid, in fact, had sufficient support from Democrats to pass the president?s debt-ceiling plan, but they weren?t confident enough to risk a roll-call vote. Earlier in the week, McConnell had demanded a vote on the fiscal-cliff package floated by Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner. Reid had declined to allow that vote.

Ultimately, some Republicans took solace in the fact that House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, has been the party?s chief negotiator with the president and that he could glide past the Senate episode.

"I don't see it changing things substantively since Boehner can distance himself from this and still use the debt ceiling as leverage with the White House as the main GOP negotiator,? a Senate Republican aide said.

It was Boehner?s rabble-rousing conference, after all, that spearheaded the debt-limit fight 17 months ago. And many House conservatives are still itching for another round in that fiscal bout.

?We really we ought to have a protracted debate on the debt ceiling,? Rep. Dennis Ross, R-Fla., said earlier in the week. He acknowledged that he and fellow freshmen were pegged as ?obstructionist? during the last showdown. But he said, ?For the first time in 80 years, regardless of what party was in control, we had a protracted debate on the debt ceiling; I think that?s something the American public would want to hear, would want to see.?

Still, Democrats believe McConnell tipped his hand and played the GOP trump card too soon--at least before winning some Democratic concessions.

Police: Woman kills cousin during family gathering | FOX5 San Diego

Police investigate the stabbing death of a Las Vegas man outside an Oceanside home.

SANTEE, Calif. ? A Tennessee woman was in custody Thursday in San Diego County on suspicion of murdering her cousin during a large family gathering in Oceanside.

Lashauna Shatrell Blanks, 24, allegedly stabbed 35-year-old Jerry Faulkner of Las Vegas in the chest outside his parents? condominium in the 400 block of Los Arbolitos Boulevard about 7:45 p.m. Wednesday, according to police.

Medics took the victim to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Blanks was arrested at the scene, Lt. Leonard Mata said. She was booked into Las Colinas women?s jail in Santee early this morning and was being held without bail pending arraignment, scheduled for Friday afternoon.

Among those attending the get-together where Faulkner was mortally wounded were four of his children, ages 1 to 14, and Blanks? two, who are 1 and 3. It was unclear if any of the youngsters witnessed the attack, Mata said.

Authorities did not disclose a suspected motive for the violence, but the victim?s sister, Shondria Ferrand, told NBC 7 San Diego the suspect and victim had been in an ongoing dispute that turned physical at times.

Blanks, a Memphis resident, recently stayed with the victim and his fiancee at their residence, and disagreements between the two women had turned into bad blood between the cousins, she said.

A former nurse, Ferrand made a futile attempt to save her brother?s life with CPR as he lay dying on a lawn in front of their parents? home.

?I tried to bring him back ? I tried,? she told the news station, crying uncontrollably.

Scientists find oldest dinosaur -- or closest relative yet

ScienceDaily (Dec. 4, 2012) ? Researchers have discovered what may be the earliest dinosaur, a creature the size of a Labrador retriever, but with a five foot-long tail, that walked the Earth about 10 million years before more familiar dinosaurs like the small, swift-footed Eoraptor and Herrerasaurus.

The findings mean that the dinosaur lineage appeared 10 million to 15 million years earlier than fossils previously showed, originating in the Middle Triassic rather than in the Late Triassic period.

"If the newly named Nyasasaurus parringtoni is not the earliest dinosaur, then it is the closest relative found so far," according to Sterling Nesbitt, a University of Washington postdoctoral researcher in biology and lead author of a paper published online Dec. 5 in Biology Letters, a journal of the United Kingdom's Royal Society.

"For 150 years, people have been suggesting that there should be Middle Triassic dinosaurs, but all the evidence is ambiguous," he said. "Some scientists used fossilized footprints, but we now know that other animals from that time have a very similar foot. Other scientists pointed to a single dinosaur-like characteristic in a single bone, but that can be misleading because some characteristics evolved in a number of reptile groups and are not a result of a shared ancestry."

The researchers had one humerus -- or upper arm bone -- and six vertebrae to work with. They determined that the animal likely stood upright, measured 7 to 10 feet in length (2 to 3 meters), was as tall as 3 feet at the hip (1 meter) and may have weighed between 45 and 135 pounds (20 to 60 kilograms).

The fossilized bones were collected in the 1930s from Tanzania, but it may not be correct to say dinosaurs originated in that country. When Nyasasaurus parringtoni lived, the world's continents were joined in the landmass called Pangaea. Tanzania would have been part of Southern Pangaea that included Africa, South America, Antarctica and Australia.

"The new findings place the early evolution of dinosaurs and dinosaur-like reptiles firmly in the southern continents," said co-author Paul Barrett at the Natural History Museum, London.

The bones of the new animal reveal a number of characteristics common to early dinosaurs and their close relatives. For example, the bone tissues in the upper arm bone appear as if they are woven haphazardly and not laid down in an organized way. This indicates rapid growth, a common feature of dinosaurs and their close relatives.

"We can tell from the bone tissues that Nyasasaurus had a lot of bone cells and blood vessels," said co-author Sarah Werning at the University of California, Berkeley, who did the bone analysis. "In living animals, we only see this many bone cells and blood vessels in animals that grow quickly, like some mammals or birds."

"The bone tissue of Nyasasaurus is exactly what we would expect for an animal at this position on the dinosaur family tree," she added. "It's a very good example of a transitional fossil; the bone tissue shows that Nyasasaurus grew about as fast as other primitive dinosaurs, but not as fast as later ones."

Another example is the upper arm bone's distinctively enlarged crest, needed to anchor the upper arm muscles. The feature, known as an elongated deltopectoral crest, is also common to all early dinosaurs.

"Nyasasaurus and its age have important implications regardless of whether this taxon is a dinosaur or the closest relatives of dinosaurs," Nesbitt said. "It establishes that dinosaurs likely evolved earlier than previously expected and refutes the idea that dinosaur diversity burst onto the scene in the Late Triassic, a burst of diversification unseen in any other groups at that time."

It now appears that dinosaurs were just part of a large diversification of archosaurs. Archosaurs were among the dominant land animals during the Triassic period 250 million to 200 million years ago and include dinosaurs, crocodiles and their kin.

"Dinosaurs are just part of this archosaur diversification, an explosion of new forms soon after the Permian extinction," Nesbitt said.

The specimen used to identify the new species is part of the collection at the Natural History Museum, London. Four vertebrae from a second specimen of Nyasasaurus, which were also used in this research, are housed in the South African Museum in Cape Town. The work was funded by the National Science Foundation and the Natural History Museum, London. The fourth co-author on the paper is Christian Sidor, UW professor of biology.

The name Nyasasaurus parringtoni is new, but "Nyasasaurus" -- combining the lake name Nyasa with the term "saurus" for lizard -- is not. The late paleontologist Alan Charig, included as a co-author on the paper, named the specimen but never documented or published in a way that was formally recognized. "Parringtoni" is in honor of University of Cambridge's Rex Parrington, who collected the specimens in the 1930s.

"What's really neat about this specimen is that it has a lot of history. Found in the '30s, first described in the 1950s but never published, then its name pops up but is never validated. Now 80 years later, we're putting it all together," Nesbitt said.

"This work highlights the important role of museums in housing specimens whose scientific importance might be overlooked unless studied and restudied in detail," Barrett said. "Many of the more important discoveries in paleontology are made in the lab, or museum storerooms, as well as in the field."

LENS, France (AP) ? The Louvre has embarked on an ambitious quest ? opening a ?150 million ($196 million) extension in an abandoned coal mining town in northern France that has an unemployment rate nearly three times the national average.

The "Louvre-Lens" project ? housed in a futuristic glass and aluminum complex ? opens this week in an attempt to silence critics who say French art is limited to the country's Parisian elite.

Proponents say the complex will offer culture to the less cultivated provinces and give residents a unique opportunity to see high-end art.

But for all its trumpeting of uniting everyone through art, the slick museum building instead highlights the contrasts with Lens' depressed city center, which is riddled with closed shops, abandoned houses, angry residents and a boarded-up cinema.

French President Francois Hollande, who visited the museum on Tuesday, didn't even bother to stop off in the city, let alone meet any residents.

To locals, the Louvre's gesture to bring culture to their forgotten city was a bit patronizing.

"Why do we need a museum and culture here? We need money and jobs," said resident Amandine Grossemy, 26. "Who's da Vinci, anyway?"

"We weren't consulted on whether we wanted one," cafe worker Veronique Roszak, 53, said of the museum. "Young people here are looking for work."

"Whoever it helps, it won't be us," said Mounira Hadhek, 26. "They've made us pay for parking now in the city center, I've got ?80 ($105) fines already. We can't afford this, all we can afford is one euro on coffee."

"They said that Lens is now alive. Look around, it's dead, all dead," added Roszak, standing next to the closed Apollo theater. "Who'll come here?"

Officials hope Louvre-Lens can help transform the city the way the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, turned a struggling industrial area into a hot travel destination. Lens was picked precisely because it was in such need of a reversal of fortune.

"It's important, as Lens is a territory that has suffered from every crisis, from every war," said Louvre director Henri Loyrette.

The city was reduced to rubble in World War I and occupied by the Nazis and battered by Allied bombings in World War II. Then workers risked their lives daily in the city's coal mines for decades ? including enduring a 1974 tragedy in which 42 miners died. When the mines closed ? the last one in 1986 ? the area was plunged into poverty.

"France abandoned us when the coal stopped, and we became a ghost town," said regional president Daniel Percheron.

The statistics agree: Lens, one of the country's poorest cities, has an unemployment rate of 24 percent, well above the national average of 9 percent.

The museum, designed by a Japanese firm, transformed a former coal mine into a grand, verdant space that boasts 6,600 trees, 26,000 shrubs and a glistening infrastructure of sleek anodized aluminum. The inside is equally impressive, with two sprawling exhibition spaces teaming with works as diverse as ancient Cycladic sculptures, Egyptian diorite statues, 11th century Italian church mosaics and Leonardo da Vinci's restored masterpiece, "The Virgin and Saint Anne."

The permanent open-plan exhibition space offers an encyclopedic overview of two millennia of art along with an avant-garde system of presentation. No work is hung from the aluminum walls, which serve as a mirror for the art.

But it's not clear this will be enough to attract 700,000 visitors in the first year and increase the city's economic output by 10% in 10 years, as officials hope. The area does not have Bilbao's beaches or its noted Basque cuisine.

"It's close to Belgium, southern England and close to Germany," noted Loyrette.

Officials say the museum, eight years in the making, is just the first step in the city's rehabilitation.

"We are telling entrepreneurs and companies: Come here.... Here there is a real future," said Percheron.

Nigerian songs have become so popular that some Ghanaian musicians even copy their lyrics, accent, composition, songs or style of song engineering. Ghana and Nigerian are not enemies ; neither is this feature attempting to brew an unhealthy competition or antagonism between them.
It wouldn?t have become an issue of discussion or to worry about if Nigerian music are popular in Ghana and Ghanaian music are also popular or doing creditably well in the latter?s country.
The facts on the grounds are that Nigerian songs are far popular in Ghana than Ghanaian music is in Nigeria. This is a big challenge to our music industry because Nigeria has a bigger market Ghana can tap
into. It?s obvious the media in Ghana is the main tool that has made Nigerian songs popular in Ghana but the questions that require answers are; how do the Nigerians influence our media for their songs to become popular in Ghana?
Is it that they pay ?fat payola? to the Ghanaian media than the Ghanaian musicians?
Do they have special agents here who do promotions for them?
And why are Ghanaian songs not that popular in Nigeria?
Could they (Nigerians) be sabotaging our music on their soil?
Or is Nigerian music better than Ghanaian music?
MUSIGA must come in on this issue on a way to make Ghanaian music popular in Nigeria. MUSIGA can propose a treaty with the Nigerian music union to promote Ghanaian music there. The Nigerian population is big and that gives them a bigger market than Ghana.
However, I certainly don?t think any measure such as banning Nigerian songs in Ghana is or will be a panacea. We must be tactful.
