Cheap Family Fun ? You Know you Want It | Performance Auto Shop

What are you doing with your family this weekend? Yes, the economy is in the tank, but that doesn?t mean that family fun has to be. In fact, one of the positive things to come out of slow economic times can be the incorporation of more low-cost but high return evenings of family entertainment. Movie tickets for four ? $36. Popcorn and coke, even if you share ? $32. An evening at home laughing and talking and playing board games ? free, or under five bucks with microwave popcorn and soda pop from the store. It?s a no-brainer.

There are some terrific games that we all already know such as Monopoly and Risk and The Game of Life. Mouse Trap looks like fun and is such a pain when you try to make it work that it ends up being funnier than almost any game you can play. Trouble, with its problematic ? I mean Pop-O-Matic ? bubble can be fun, if annoyingly loud. Parcheesi or Sorry are terrific game for all ages. But there are some that you may not have played that work well with different ages and alone or in teams.

  • Last Word ? We?ve been playing The Last Word in our house and the eight-year-old is winning. This is a fun, fast-paced game that does require players to be able to read, but they can take their time sounding out the words. The idea is that you have a topic and a letter, and everybody must think of words that fit both before the buzzer buzzes.

  • Bunco ? Yes, I know everybody plays Bunco. But now Bunco comes in a little boxed set with everything you need to have the perfect evening of family chaos. The box is even available in pink so your little girl will love it. The big fuzzy die inside the box is also pink. For the girls. Who will win. Booyah.

  • Settlers of Catan ? Boy is this a good game! You have to have a least three players, and if you have children younger than nine or 10 they will need to be on somebody?s team, but this is a really neat strategy game. It takes a couple of hours to play. Players collect resources that help them build roads and homes and towns. You can change the board up so it?s not the same every time. This is a good one.

    ?

  • Quiddler ? Here is a game for the whole family. It is much like Scrabble but with cards and no particular advantage for older participants. It can be played by one to eight players in under an hour and, though it may be best not to tell anyone, can actually be educational and tremendously fun at the same time.
