NRA says Obama wants gun seizures

The National Rifle Association is using a Justice Department memo it obtained to argue in ads that the Obama administration believes its gun control plans won't work unless the government seizes firearms and requires national gun registration ? ideas the White House has not proposed and does not support.

The NRA's assertion and its obtaining of the memo in the first place underscore the no-holds-barred battle under way as Washington's fight over gun restrictions heats up.

The memo, under the name of one of the Justice Department's leading crime researchers, critiques the effectiveness of gun control proposals, including some of President Barack Obama's. A Justice Department official called the memo an unfinished review of gun violence research and said it does not represent administration policy.

The memo says requiring background checks for more gun purchases could help, but also could lead to more illicit weapons sales. It says banning assault weapons and high capacity ammunition magazines produced in the future but exempting those already owned by the public, as Obama has proposed, would have limited impact because people now own so many of those items.

It also says that even total elimination of assault weapons would have little overall effect on gun killings because assault weapons account for a limited proportion of those crimes.

The nine-page document says the success of universal background checks would depend in part on "requiring gun registration," and says gun buybacks would not be effective "unless massive and coupled with a ban."

The administration has not proposed gun registration, buybacks or banning all firearms. But gun registration and ownership curbs are hot-button issues for the NRA and other gun-rights groups, which strenuously oppose the ideas.

Justice Department and White House officials declined to provide much information about the memo or answer questions about it on the record.

The memo has the look of a preliminary document and calls itself "a cursory summary" and assessment of gun curb initiatives. The administration has not release it officially.

But the NRA has posted the memo on one of its websites and cites it in advertising aimed at whipping up opposition to Obama's efforts to contain gun violence. The ad says the paper shows that the administration "believes that a gun ban will not work without mandatory gun confiscation" and thinks universal background checks "won't work without requiring national gun registration" ? ideas the president has not proposed or expressed support for.

"Still think President Obama's proposals sound reasonable?" Chris W. Cox, the NRA's chief Washington lobbyist, says in the ad.

Last month, White House spokesman Jay Carney said none of Obama's proposals "would take away a gun from a single law-abiding American." Other administration officials have said their plans would not result in gun seizures or a national gun registry.

A Justice Department official who would only discuss the issue on condition of anonymity said the NRA ad misrepresents Obama's gun proposals and that the administration has never backed a gun registry or gun confiscation.

While the memo's analysis of gun curb proposals presents no new findings, it is unusual for a federal agency document to surface that raises questions about a president's plans during debate on a high-profile issue such as restricting firearms.

Obama wants to ban assault weapons and ammunition magazines exceeding 10 rounds that are produced in the future. He wants universal background checks for nearly all gun purchases. Today, checks are only mandatory on sales by federally licensed gun dealers, not transactions at gun shows or other private sales.

His plan also includes tougher federal laws against gun trafficking and straw purchases, which occur when a person legally buys a firearm but sells it to a criminal or someone else barred from owning a weapon.

Interest in the gun issue has intensified since the December shootings in Newtown, Conn., that killed 20 first-graders and six staffers at an elementary school. The Democratic-led Senate Judiciary Committee plans to write legislation addressing some of Obama's proposals in the next week or two.

The NRA's Cox declined to say how his organization obtained the memo.

He said the commercial is running online in 15 states, including many Republican-leaning states where Democrats will defend Senate seats next year, such as Alaska, Arkansas, Louisiana, Montana, North Carolina, South Dakota and West Virginia. There are also ads in papers in five states.

The memo was written under the name of Greg Ridgeway, acting director of the National Institute of Justice, the Justice Department's research arm. It is dated Jan. 4, nearly two weeks before Obama announced his plan for restricting guns, and Ridgeway's first day as acting chief.

Justice Department officials said Ridgeway was not granting interviews. He came to the institute last July from the RAND Corporation, a nonprofit research institution where he studied criminal justice issues, and has a Ph.D. in statistics.

The memo says straw purchases and gun thefts are the largest sources of firearms used in crimes, and that such transactions "would most likely become larger if background checks at gun shows and private sellers were addressed."

Gun control supporters said the NRA ad and the Justice memo don't mention that the current federal background check system blocked gun sales to 2.1 million criminals and others barred from owning guns between 1994, when the checks began, and 2010. Also ignored is that Obama has proposed cracking down on straw purchases to prevent a growth in illegal transactions, they said.

Advocates of restricting guns also said the memo omitted mention of several studies that affirm the effectiveness of firearms curbs. These include a 2010 police group analysis showing more than one-third of police departments found increased criminal use of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines since the 2004 expiration of the ban on those items.

"It doesn't appear to be a serious discussion of gun violence prevention policy, never mind an expression of administration policy," said Joshua Horwitz, executive director of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence.

The memo says that out of 11,000 annual gun homicides, an average of 35 deaths yearly are from mass shootings, defined as those with four or more victims.

"Policies that address the larger firearm homicide issue will have a far greater impact even if they do not address the particular issues of mass shootings," it says.

It says there were an estimated 1.5 million assault weapons before the 10-year ban on those firearms began in 1994, so their sheer number would weaken a new ban exempting existing weapons. Such guns accounted for just 2 percent to 8 percent of crimes before the 1994 ban, so eliminating assault weapons "would not have a large impact on gun homicides," the memo said.

Recent data on the assault weapons ban impact is scarce because since the 1990s, Congress has blocked most federal research on the effect that firearms have on public health. As part of the gun restrictions Obama proposed last month, he ordered federal scientific agencies to research gun violence.

Galaxy Note 8.0 Features Air View-Enhanced Flipboard App, Free Awesome Note For Android, And Other Content Perks

note8-3The Galaxy Note 8.0 -- the newest device in Samsung?s many-sized range of tablets, unveiled today at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona -- has just managed to trump Apple?s iPad Mini in the small tablet category with one-tenth of an inch more of screen space (more on the device in our hands-on). At the same time, Samsung is also introducing a few new services and features -- including expanded hovering capabilities and more apps, which it hopes will also help it gain more consumer ground against the world?s biggest tablet maker. The extra features show that Samsung sees improved services and content this as key to improving its market share in the tablet space.

iMore Editors' Choice: Fantastical, 123D Creature, Robot Unicorn Attack, and more

iMore Editors' Choice: Fantastical, 123D Creature, Robot Unicorn Attack, and more

Every week, the editors and writers at iMore carefully select some of our favorite, most useful, most extraordinary apps, accessories, gadgets, and websites. This week's selections include a few games, an app feature unicorns and robots, a cool calendar, a weather app, and a fun, collaborative game for kids.

Fantastical - Chris

This week I decided to look for a new calendar app as the built in app is becoming really boring and in desperate need of a refresh. I took the plunge and I bought Fantastical and I have to say it is a beautiful calendar app.

The user interface works really well and the app's color schemes make it elegant and sophisticated yet very simple to pick up and use. Add in the excellent real language understanding and it makes entering new appointments a breeze. Putting that simply, it understands regular text, meaning you don't have to enter individual fields. For example, you can simply enter Lunch Meeting with Chris On Tuesday and Fantastical will take care of the rest. It really works just like that even when entering events using Siri.

If you are bored of the iPhone?s built in calendar and want something that is both easy to use and looks fantastic; do yourself a favor and get Fantastical. It really is the best calendar app that I have ever used!

Conditions - Joseph Keller

When I check the whether, I don?t need a lot of information. I don?t need maps, I don?t need radar. I just need the temperature and general conditions. That?s what makes the simple app Conditions so nice. It just displays the current weather conditions in your area. The background changes from white during the day to black at night, and if you need a five-day forecast, just the screen to get a general idea of what your week will look like. Conditions also has pull-to-refresh, complete with a nice little thermometer animation, to update current weather information.

Conditions focuses on simplicity, so if you want or need a lot of weather information, look elsewhere. But if you just want the current weather right now, and maybe get a preview of the week ahead, Conditions is what you?re looking for.

Puzzle Craft - Simon Sage

I always found the casual city building games kind of mindless - you win just for showing up to collect resources. Puzzle Craft is an awesome new spin on the formula where you have to (gasp!) actually do something to collect your rewards. Puzzle Craft is basically a 50/50 split of resource management and puzzle solving. Yeah, the title of the game is thoroughly apt. When you tap on a section of your town, you're given a set number of turns to trace lines through identical resource icons on a grid. The longer the line, the more bonus points you get. If you've ever played Triple Town, the resource hierarchy will make plenty of sense to you. Carrots only spawn on the puzzle grid after you line up a certain number of grains, for example. As you build your town using the resources you gather in these games, you gain access to new specialist workers which can make reaching those rich resources easier. Over time, you unlock new kinds of resources and build consumable power-ups to use through the gathering process. A big update is coming next week with archaeology-themed content, so get warmed up now!

Robot Unicorn Attack - Ally Kazmucha

Robot Unicorn Attack is probably one of the most silly games you'll ever play but it's entertaining and hilarious all at the same time. It's made by Adult Swim so you probably should expect no less.

The premise is that you gallop, dash, and jump to your dreams. Mainly, you're avoiding obstacles by jumping over them or barreling through them. Is there necessarily a huge point to the game? No. But just like titles like Fruit Ninjas and Tiny Wings, it's a great time waster and what's better than unicorns? Yep, nothing!

123D Creature - Rene Ritchie

I'll keep this short and sweet, because? well, I have to get back to using 123 Creature. It's an app by the renowned Autodesk and what it lets you do is something no less nor more wondrous than create three-dimensional biological models on your iPad. You can articulate them, mold them, paint them, and even print them out afterwards if you have the right equipment. There's also social sharing, an a community whose models you can try out.

It's like having Weta Workshop or Industrial Lights & Magic at your finger tips.

Now if you need to know more, watch the video up top. I have a Jedi-eating monster to finish!

The Travel Channel Layover Guide - Chris Parsons

I have a wee bit of a secret. I really don't like traveling. Sure, I like the stuff that happens when I get where I am going but the whole getting there process is just absolutely dreadful to me. Cancelled flights, delays and of course those layovers. Luckily, I discovered The Travel Channel Layover Guide and should I get caught somewhere I'll be better prepared to handle it. The Layover guide supports 20 different major cities around the world 20 major including Amsterdam, Atlanta, Chicago, Dublin, Hong Kong, London, Los Angeles, Miami, Montreal, New Orleans, New York, Paris, Philadelphia, Rome, San Francisco, Sao Paolo, Seattle, Singapore, Taipei and Toronto and offers up plenty of tips, information, maps and visuals to help you enjoy the best of the worst time. All that said, it's quite handy if you're simply just traveling to those areas as well. The app is free to download though, we're not making any promises that Anthony Bourdain won't follow you around should you use it.

The Electric Company Party Game: Lost on Prankster Planet - Leanna Lofte

The Electric Company Party Game: Lost on Prankster Planet is a collaborative game for 5-9 year old children by PBS Kids. The premise is that Marcus and Jessica are stuck on Prankster Planet and they need the help of 2 to 4 players to complete physical challenges, silly brainstorms, and math questions.

Lost on Prankster Planet is a multiplayer board game and each team member takes turn doing the challenges. Some challenges are for the individual player and some are for the whole team. Topics include geometry, addition and subtraction, data analysis and graphing, telling time, coin value and recognition, and more. The goals are part of 1st and 2nd grade math and literacy curricula.

What I really like about Lost on Prankster Planet is that it's a multiplayer game for kids that focus on collaborative play. Some healthy competition is also good for kids, but playing as a team is also great. PBS did a great job with this game and is a fun way to let your kids play with you iPad while still being social with their siblings or friends.

Your choice?

Now that we've chosen our favorites for the week, we want to hear yours! Did you pick up a killer app, accessory, or game this week? Let us know in the comments below!

Wordless Wedding: Sarah and Casey?s Self-Officiated Philly Food Truck Wedding

One sentence sum up of the wedding vibe: Pure Joy.

The Info?Photographer:?Kateryn Silva Photography?(APW Sponsor) / Venue:?Maas Building?/ Food: Pitruco Pizza?/ Dessert: Little Baby?s Ice Cream?/?Music: West Philadelphia Orchestra / Flowers:?Diana Settar?/ Sarah?s Dress: Lyden by J Crew

Other cool stuff we should know about: Something that we both wanted for our wedding ceremony was to write our own vows and officiate ourselves. Being two introverts, this was probably a surprising choice, but it felt right. We had both arrived at the decision to get married after careful consideration, so we felt that this was a way to really own this new chapter in our lives. Pronouncing ourselves husband and wife was a really awesome and empowering moment for us.

Also during that weekend, our families met for the first time. I?m originally from Illinois and Casey?s from Virginia, so there had not been a chance for them to meet previously. My favorite moment was sitting around our dining room the day before with my family and Casey?s mom. We chatted and joked and caught up, and it felt so natural and easy to have everyone together.

Favorite thing about the wedding: (Really hard to decide on just one moment, but?) Towards the end of dinner, the West Philadelphia Orchestra made a surprise entrance as they filed into the dining area and started playing music. It was so fun and joyful and got everyone off their bums and dancing.

Oregon QB Says A&M?s Manziel Plays ?Backyard Football?

mariota-manzielSo maybe his nickname should be Johnny Backyard Football.? At least that?s what Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota seems to think.

Judging by the comments on a couple of Aggie messageboards, the Ducks? QB seems to have ruffled some feathers ? pun intended ? when he described Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel?s game as ?backyard football.?

?For a lot of us, it?s how we were introduced to the game ? just going out and making plays.? I?d like to do that.? It would be fun.? But it would be outside of my calling here.?

?

Now, personally I don?t see what?s so inflammatory about that comment.? Granted, Manziel was once committed to Oregon and perhaps there?s a bit of history between the two signal-callers, but this seems to be a case of looking for trash talk.

Mariota simply alluded to the differences between his role in Eugene and Manziel?s role in College Station.? And judging by that Heisman Trophy he picked up in December, Manziel seems to fit his role perfectly.

Stay tuned, but I don?t think Aggie fans should be losing any sleep over this one.

Metro Police investigate a shooting and multi-car accident on the Las Vegas Strip in Las Vegas early Thursday morning, Feb. 21, 2013. Gunshots fired from a black Range Rover on the Las Vegas Strip that caused a Maserati to crash into a taxi, creating a fireball and killing three people as the SUV sped away. Initial reports had it as a gunfight between the luxury SUV and the high-end sports car. But investigators don't think anyone in the Maserati was shooting, said Sgt. John Sheahan. Law enforcement personal investigate the scene of a mulit-vehicle accident on Las Vegas Blvd. and Flamingo Road Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013. (AP) ? Bullets were flying from a black Range Rover at a gray Maserati as the vehicles raced toward a red light on the Las Vegas Strip.

Beneath the neon lights, police say, the Maserati ran the red light at one of the Strip's busiest intersections and smashed into a taxi that exploded into flames early Thursday, killing the two people inside.

Three more cars and a utility truck collided at the crossroads home to Bellagio, Caesars Palace and Bally's, leaving at least six more people injured as the Range Rover sped off in the predawn darkness.

The Maserati driver was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The dramatic scene that more than one tourist compared to something out of a violent action movie set off a frantic search for the occupants of the Range Rover and marked the latest violent episode on the Strip since the beginning of the year.

Two people were critically wounded in a shooting at a parking garage on Feb. 6, and a tourist was stabbed last Saturday in an elevator at The Hotel at Mandalay Bay.

Clark County Sheriff Doug Gillespie told reporters several hours after Thursday's attack that it was sparked by an argument in the valet area of the nearby Aria hotel-casino, and that the violence at the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Flamingo Road did not reflect the values of Las Vegas residents or visitors.

"What happened will not be tolerated," Gillespie said. He promised the shooters would be "found and prosecuted to the full extent of the law."

On the Strip, the fiery rampage shocked tourists.

"This doesn't happen where we come from, not on this scale," said Mark Thompson, who was visiting from Manchester, England, with his wife. "We get stabbings, and gang violence, but this is like something out of a movie. Like 'Die Hard' or something."

Police said they were contacting authorities in three neighboring states about the Range Rover Sport with dark tinted windows, distinctive black custom rims and paper dealer ads in place of license plates that fled the scene about 4:20 a.m.

In Southern California, the California Highway Patrol alerted officers in at least three counties to be on the lookout for the SUV.

Las Vegas Police Sgt. John Sheahan said the Range Rover was last seen near the Venetian resort as it headed north from the shooting scene on Las Vegas Boulevard.

Witnesses also told police the SUV and Maserati had come from the nearby CityCenter area, the home of Aria just south of the site of the attack.

"We have numerous witnesses to this," Sheahan said. "But what is the genesis of this? We don't know yet."

Predawn jogger Eric Lackey was on his way back to the New York-New York hotel when he snapped a cellphone photo of the blazing scene moments after the crash. Black smoke billowed from the flaming taxi, amid popping sounds from the fire.

Lackey, of Forest Hill, Md., said a security officer in a yellow shirt performed CPR on a person on the sidewalk while police officers canvassed a small crowd of perhaps 15 onlookers gathering at the scene.

"Police were asking if anyone was still in the vehicles and if they heard gunfire," Lackey told The Associated Press. "That's when I realized it wasn't just a regular accident."

Sheahan said police have video from traffic cameras at the intersection and were checking hotel surveillance systems. The video will not be made public, he said.

Police said the driver and passenger in the taxi were killed. The male driver of the Maserati also died, and his passenger was shot. Police did not release their names, citing the ongoing investigation.

The crumpled, gray sports car, which had no license plates, came to rest several feet away from the incinerated taxi.

"The people I feel sorry for are the people in the taxi," said Elvina Joyce, a tourist from Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. "Seconds made all the difference in the world for them. Wrong place, wrong time."

The area near the scene has been the site of high-profile violence in the past.

Rapper Tupac Shakur was killed in a drive-by in 1996 about a block away under similar circumstances, as assailants opened fire on his luxury sedan from a vehicle on Flamingo Road. The killing has never been solved.

Former US Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D) of Illinois and his wife, former Chicago alderman Sandi Jackson, pleaded guilty in federal court Wednesday to charges related to the use of $750,000 in campaign funds for a personal seven-year spending spree.

Dean Reynolds reports on how the former congressman looted the funds of his donors.

A 22-page document released by the US Attorney?s Office Wednesday details ways the couple collaborated to conceal the spending from federal authorities, even as they solicited fresh campaign donations to keep the spigot flowing. It also outlined how the Jacksons spent campaign money on both the sublime (a $43,350 gold-plated Rolex watch, furs, and exclusive sports and celebrity memorabilia) and the mundane (toilet paper, underwear, children?s vitamins, and food).

?Jesse Jackson lied many time over many years to hide this fraud from the government and most importantly, from his constituents,? US Attorney Ron Machin said at a press conference late Wednesday. ?It?s important to remember the true victims of Jackson?s crimes. This sort of conduct, I don?t think we?ve ever seen it to this scope if you look at the list of items and the amount spent. His [campaign fund] was his personal piggy bank.?

Both Jacksons broke down in tears several times during their separate hearings in Washington. Mr. Jackson, who was charged with one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, mail fraud, and false statements, told US District Judge Robert Wilkins he wished to waive his right to a trial because he has ?no interest in wasting the taxpayers? time or their money.?

?For years I lived off my campaign. I used money that should have been for campaign purposes, and I used them for myself personally,? he said.

Ms. Jackson, who is charged with a single tax crime, also waived her right to a trial and is set for sentencing July 1. Her husband, scheduled for sentencing June 28, faces a possible prison term of nearly five years and a fine of up to $100,000. Sandi Jackson faces a possible prison term of nearly two years.

Under the plea agreement, Mr. Jackson will be sentenced to between 46 and 57 months. His lead attorney, Reid Weingarten, is likely to argue for the shorter sentence on grounds that bipolar depression, a diagnosis Jackson received last fall, contributed to his actions.

Mr. Machin, however, noted Wednesday that Jackson ?was an efficient congressman? during the seven years in question and capably made numerous public appearances, including a speech at the Democratic National Convention in 2008.??It?s hard for me to imagine how they?re going to reconcile this scheme and it being a byproduct of a recent medical condition,? he said.

Marcellus McRae, a former federal prosecutor now in private practice in Los Angeles, says that because Mr. Weingarten did not use the medical condition as a factor to fight the indictment, it may not be a strong enough argument.

Sony's Yoshida: 'used games can play on a PS4'

In news that should keep parties going until the early morning at Gamestops everywhere, Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida tells Eurogamer that used games will still play on the PlayStation 4. Despite some issues with the translation, he stated clearly that "used games can play on a PS4." That appears to clearly put the issue to bed, despite rumors or patent misinterpretations passed around the internet recently. Now, we wait for our own chance to ask a few questions of Sony about its upcoming console like "what does it look like?", and the competition over at Microsoft goes on the hot seat with secondhand-loving gamers.

Cancer Society 'Relay' returns to Sitka | KCAW

Dr. Gordy Klatt ran the first Relay ? 24-hours non-stop ? by himself in 1985.

The Relay for Life is coming back to Sitka.

For twenty-eight years, the Relay has been one of the primary fund raising activities of the American Cancer Society. This year, over 5,000 communities across the country will participate in the all-night event.

Chase Carter is the community relationship manager for the American Cancer Society in Anchorage. He says the Relay for Life began informally in 1985, when Dr. Gordy Klatt, an oncologist in Tacoma, Washington, decided to make a personal statement to raise awareness about cancer prevention and treatment.

?So he went out one night, himself ? he was a marathon runner ? and ran for 24 hours. And it was such a crazy, novel idea that the next year when he was doing it again people joined him and paid to relay along with him, because no one really wanted to do the whole 24 hours. But they were willing to do an hour. So it?s just sort of evolved over the past twenty-eight years.?

Carter says the Relay never developed as a race. He calls it a family-friendly night out. Marathoners can carry Dr. Klatt?s tradition forward if they like, but the Relay now is all-inclusive.

?Everyone is welcome. We really encourage survivors to come, and a lot of times cancer survivors have mobility problems. So it?s a walk, and you get a team together of five to fifteen coworkers, family, and friends. You get this little campsite, and there?s one member from your team walking throughout the overnight event.?

A big part of the Relay is simply raising the profile of the American Cancer Society. Carters says the American Cancer Society is sometimes discouraged when cancer patients and their families fail to use free services and support available to them around the state. Most patients simply don?t know that they can obtain rides from the Anchorage airport, for example, if they?re arriving for treatment, or get help with hotel bills.

?Relay really helps get the word out in a community. We know we?re underserving the residents of Sitka, and we?re hoping that when we bring Relay to Sitka, we can work in conjunction with the local cancer groups to get the word out about what?s available to Sitkans.?

Planning for the American Cancer Society?s 2013 Relay for Life in Sitka gets underway tonight with a kickoff event at the Sitka Pioneer Home. Anyone interested in helping with the Relay ? or any businesses interested in sponsoring the event or teams ? are welcome to attend.

The location and time of the Sitka Relay have not been firmed up yet. Carter says the organization is thinking about using Moller Field, next to Sitka Community Hospital, as a starting location. He says summertime usually works best for the event. Organizers are looking at dates sometime in June or July.

KCAW?s Ed Ronco contributed to this report.

Internet safety tips provided by Google

GoogleApps_Feb19_AThe Internet is still in its infancy. While it is a deeply ingrained aspect of almost every part of life, it still is a bit like the Wild West, in that it can often be unsafe. One way to make it more secure is by increasing user awareness. That?s why on February 5 the Safer Internet Day was held. Google got into the action by releasing some interesting security tips all users should follow.

Here?s are five tips Google recommends:

1. Use a good password
Your password serves a dual purpose, it identifies you and also allows access to your information, websites, etc. If you have a weak password, or use the same one across different accounts, you are at a higher risk of being hacked. Google recommends that you use an unique password that?s long and contains numbers, symbols and letters.

The main idea here is to use unique passwords. You shouldn?t be using the same password for your work computer/accounts for online banking or personal accounts. This advice doesn?t just pertain to you, as your company?s systems should also have strong, unique passwords. If you don?t adopt this advice, the chances of someone being able to hack into different systems once they have one password increases.

2. Practice password common sense
Having a strong password isn?t enough, you also need to take steps to protect it. You should never send your password over email or share it with others if it can be helped. If you receive emails from your bank, service companies, friends, etc. asking you for your password, they are likely phishing emails, and should be deleted.

It would also be beneficial to change your passwords on a regular basis. There is no set limit, but once a year at the very least is a good idea. If you have trouble remembering long passwords, Google suggests that, ?Writing down your passwords isn?t necessarily a bad idea. But if you do this, don?t leave notes with your passwords in plain sight, on your computer or desk.?

3. Monitor security settings
Almost every website that you have an account with, Google included, upgrades their security policies on a regular basis. This means that your security settings could change, or more powerful settings could be introduced without you being notified. Therefore, you should periodically review your security settings to see what, if anything has changed, and to update them if new settings are introduced.

4. Be socially responsible
When it comes to online presence, nothing is more powerful for a company?s brand than social media. While a great tool, it?s all too easy to post something inflammatory, offensive or inappropriate, which could negatively impact your business. Before you post something on either your business or personal site, be sure to look over it and ensure it isn?t embarrassing or harmful to your business reputation.

5. Log off/lock it
It?s advisable to either turn your computer off after you?re done using it, or at the very least log off. This will prevent unauthorized users from being able to gain access. If you use a mobile phone and are constantly signed in to different services/apps, it?s a good idea to set your phone to lock itself after a certain period of time. This can be done by going into the security settings on your phone.

These are just five recommended tips from Google?s security experts which are well worth taking note of if you want to ensure you and your company?s data is safe. If you would like to learn more about how you can make the Internet safer, please contact us today.

Teachers train teachers, with promising results

Stephen Smith / American Public Media

Jennifer Larsen guides her third-grade class through a story-telling exercise at Edison Elementary School in Long Beach, Calif. She's one of three teachers at the school who coach other teachers on teaching writing.

By Stephen Smith for The Hechinger Report

Jandella Faulkner crouches beside a table of busy third-graders in Jennifer Larsen?s class at Edison Elementary School. The students have pencils in hand, outlines spread around them, and a story about penguins and otters in progress.

Faulkner stands to call across the room: ?Loving how this group is already talking, Ms. Larsen.? ?Then she swoops down on another table of young authors.

Jandella Faulkner is a teaching coach in the Long Beach, Calif., school district. Her job is to train a select group of teachers at Edison Elementary, including Jennifer Larsen, in a new literacy curriculum called Write From The Beginning. ?It?s part of a district-wide training system that relies on teachers working with each other to improve classroom practices. So, with Faulkner?s help, Larsen and the other site coaches at Edison train their colleagues at the school how to use Write From The Beginning in their own classrooms.

Many American school districts rely heavily on outside experts, professional conferences and traveling consultants to conduct on-the-job training (also known as professional development). New York City, the nation?s largest school district, spent about $100 million last year on professional development consultants. In most cases, there?s little evidence to show whether the outside groups are helping schools improve, says Pamela Grossman, a professor at Stanford University?s Graduate School of Education.

?There is a lot of money spent on professional development that does not really support teachers in learning how to improve,? Grossman says.

Long Beach creates its own training teams. For years, the Long Beach Unified School District has had one of the nation's best-regarded professional development programs for new and veteran teachers, according to Stephanie Hirsh, executive director of Learning Forward, a national nonprofit organization focused on teacher education.

?Our system is really invested in building internal capacity,? says Jill Baker, the district?s assistant superintendent for elementary and K-8, and chief academic officer. ?What that means is teachers become leaders and trainers. We?re not bringing someone in from the outside. We?re teaching teachers within to go back to their school sites to train others.?

'Ahead of the curve'
Professional development is seen as a critical component of many education reform initiatives. National studies show that good training programs are especially important in high-poverty districts like Long Beach, according to Learning Forward. With some 84,000 students, Long Beach is California?s third-largest district. Most of the students are from families of color. Some 70 percent qualify for free or reduced lunch, an indication that families live at or below the poverty level.

Education experts say that good, independent research on what constitutes professional development for teachers is relatively scarce. Even so, more than $1 billion is spent on teachers? on-the-job training each year in the United States, according to an analysis of data collected by the U.S. Department of Education.

The Long Beach district is ?ahead of the curve,? Pamela Grossman says. ?Professional development that?s embedded in teaching and embedded in practice is likely to have more impact on what teachers do,? Grossman says. ?A model where coaches are familiar with the schools, the districts and the curriculum ? and are therefore able to offer fairly tailored coaching ? has a better chance of moving practice along.?

Long Beach administrators credit the Write From The Beginning curriculum ? and the teacher training that accompanies it ? with turning around dismal test scores at many of the participating schools. District figures show that schools scoring at or below 20 percent proficiency in state writing tests have boosted their numbers above 50 percent since 2007. Some once-struggling schools have posted writing test results above 80 percent.

Long Beach administrators say there have been no independent, peer-reviewed studies of its professional development program. But the district has been a winner, and a five-time finalist, of the prestigious Broad Prize, given by the California-based Broad Foundation to recognize urban school districts that improve student academic performance and narrow achievement gaps between poor and more affluent students. The Broad Foundation cited the district?s professional development program as an essential element in Long Beach?s ability to outperform other high-poverty school districts in student achievement. ?(Disclaimer: the Broad Foundation is among the funders of The Hechinger Report.)

Third graders at Signal Hill Elementary work on a writing assignment.

Writing 'so difficult to teach'
At Signal Hill Elementary, another Long Beach school, Principal Lauren Price points out that elementary school teachers must master a range of subjects, while middle and high school teachers specialize in single subject areas. Professional development is ?essential? to keep teachers up to speed, she says. ?Every year, researchers are learning more about the way kids learn and grow and develop,? Price says. ?There are new and different ways to do things.?

The principal at Edison Elementary enlisted Jennifer Larsen and her colleagues, Kevin Quinn and Ruby Gaytan, to be the Edison site coaches for writing. They?re veteran teachers; all have been in the classroom 15 years or more. Each member gets 48 hours of training in the curriculum, starting with a summer workshop. Faulkner visits their classrooms about once a month. The Write From The Beginning curriculum was developed by Thinking Maps, a North Carolina education company.

?Writing was something that had been neglected for so many years because it was so difficult to teach,? Larsen says. ?I saw this as something the kids really need.? Long Beach writing teachers are being trained to use graphical organizers ? the so-called ?thinking maps? ? to help students organize their thoughts, describe characters, marshal evidence, come up with key words and plot other writing elements.

Fourth-grade teacher Ruby Gaytan points to a thinking map projected on her classroom wall with a list of qualities that describe Ivan, a character her students are writing about.? He wants to sell salt but is thwarted by a greedy king. ?How to describe Ivan? ?

?Broke, no money!? one student calls out.

?Determined!? another declares.

Gaytan directs her students to use their freshly minted list of adjectives in Ivan?s story of struggle. ?If you can think it ...,? Gaytan prompts.

?You can say it,? the class responds in unison.

Gaytan says the off-hours training she gets with the writing curriculum keeps her fresh in the classroom. ?The majority of teachers love to learn, that?s why we teach. It keeps me motivated,? Gaytan says.

Eye on Common Core standards
Kevin Quinn, also a fourth-grade teacher, says the training will help teachers stay ?ahead of the game,? as Common Core State Standards are adopted by California schools in 2014.? The Common Core curriculum puts a heavy emphasis on student achievement in writing.

Larsen says the curriculum and the coaching have made her both a better writer, and a better writing teacher. ??I?m more aware when I?m reading aloud to the kids of all the great descriptions and the vivid language in every text,? Larsen says. ?When I model writing for them, I express myself better.?

Coaches and teachers get paid for the time they spend on professional development, but Quinn and others describe it as ?minimal compensation.? Meanwhile, the budget woes and accompanying teacher layoffs of recent years mean that Larsen, Gaytan and Quinn face classrooms of 30 children every day instead of 20.

?Whereas the majority of our staff wants to participate in the professional development, there is a lot of burnout,? Quinn says. ?My workload has increased, my accountability has increased, but my discretionary time has not increased. So it becomes very difficult.?

Lisa Worsham, the head of English curriculum for K-5 schools in Long Beach, acknowledges that teachers are under stress. But she says professional development can help overcome the sense of isolation a busy teacher can feel. ?There are a lot of us in the building, but we show up for work, we close our door, we teach all day, we?re exhausted, we leave the classroom and go home,? Worsham says. Without signing up for training, ?there?s not a lot of opportunity to sit down with five other teachers and collaborate,? she says.

In addition to the in-class training, local site coaches meet four times a year with Jandella Faulkner at the district?s training center. Faulkner?s classroom is stocked with flip charts, baskets of colorful markers and a small mountain of sticky notes ? the raw materials of professional development workshops. A tall and magnetic figure, Faulkner encourages a group of nine site coaches to swap stories about what is working ? and what?s floundering ? back in their respective schools.

Faulkner holds up a training notebook. ?When do you have the time to open up this binder and say, ?what does my site need?? This is your time to do it,? she declares.

Coaches as politicians
Coaching one?s colleagues can be a politically tricky enterprise. ?It?s about having a rapport, really forming a relationship with each individual teacher,? says Jeff Lamperts of Willard Elementary.

Cheryl Hubert of Starr King Elementary, another site coach, says being a teacher in the local trenches gives her more credibility with her peers than some outside consultant who parachutes in. ?They know who I am,? Hubert says. ?They feel more comfortable with me than someone from a business [where they] think, what are they selling??

Faulkner says many Long Beach teachers are eager to take up the new writing techniques that she?s helping to spread across the district. But not all. ?We have teachers at the end of their careers say, ?I?m not trying anything new.? And convincing them to try something is a huge challenge,? Faulkner says.

At Lindsey Middle School, the language arts staff is using a similar literacy curriculum called Write For The Future And Beyond. The local site coaches at Lindsey get released from class nine days during a year for training. The district also sends teaching coaches to the school for in-class visits once a month or more, depending on how well the writing program takes hold, according to Stacy Casanave, a middle school literacy coach.

Lindsey teacher Shauna Hutchinson says the fat curriculum binder looked overwhelming at first. ?But once you went to training they broke it down for you,? she says.

Another facet of the Long Beach professional development program is a close, long-standing relationship with the College of Education at California State University, Long Beach. School personnel help with teaching and research at Cal State. Students at Cal State do their student-teaching in Long Beach schools.

Historically, most of the district?s beginning teachers have been Cal State graduates, according to Jill Baker, the district?s assistant superintendent. The district requires newly minted teachers to go through a prescribed on-the-job training program in their first years. But California?s fiscal crisis and the Great Recession have caused the Long Beach school district to slash hundreds of millions of dollars from its budget, laying off hundreds of teachers and cutting programs. Newer teachers were the first to go. Few beginners get hired.

Long Beach spends $5.4 million a year on professional development, less than 1 percent of the district?s $691 million budget. Professional development was cut nearly in half during and after the recession. In fiscal year 2006-07, 4,546 employees attended 11,763 training sessions. In fiscal 2011-12, 1,945 employees attended 6,982 sessions. Baker says the district has focused teacher training on areas that can have the most impact on how students learn. These include writing, mathematics and school behavior programs. There is less opportunity for individual teachers to select workshops or training programs in other areas such as creative arts and social studies.

?We?ve had to take a lot of things that we liked to do in the past and really narrow it down to what your students are showing us they need,? Baker says. ?Professional development for teachers, and for principals as well, has been at the core of the work that we?ve done that has garnered results. ?It?s part of the district culture, and it continues to work over time.?

This story was reported by Stephen Smith of American Public Media, in collaboration with The Hechinger Report, a non-profit, foundation-funded education news site based at Teachers College, Columbia University.
