?Ashley Cullen, 9, and Nica Digerness, 11, demonstrated their athletic prowess when they brought home the gold from the State Games of America. ?They had the honor of representing the State of Colorado figure skating while in the Parade of Athletes in San Diego.
Ashley Cullen placed first in Beginner 3 Free Skate and Beginner 3 Complusary. ?NicaDigerness placed first in compulsory and solo interpretive events, receiving two gold metals in pre preliminary and preliminary.? Both girls qualified for State Games of America in Colorado Springs in September 2010. ?
The State Games of America is a biennialamateurOlympic-style event held in North America. It is organized by the National Congress of State Games. Athletes qualify for the Games by earning a medal in their respective State Games in the previous two years. Typically, over 12,000 athletes compete in the Games each time they are held.? 2011 was the first year figure skating was inducted into State Games of America.
The free skate event is a program choreographed to music and judged with two scores, one technical and one component. ?The compulsory event is judged on the execution and strength of the elements. ?The interpretive event is a music program that the skater improvises on the spot while using technical elements, artistic elements and choreography created by the skater.? Ashley and Nica have had countless hours of practice each week. ??Their focus and dedication prepared them for the nationwide competition. ?
Ashley and Nica have also qualified for 2013 State Games of America in Hershey, Pennsylvania.? The girls are coached by Kristin Conroy, Skating Director of the Greeley Ice Haus. ?Both represented Colorado well - competing against many athletes from across the nation.
