KUALA LUMPUR: Englands Peter Genever is on the verge of becoming the national squash teams elite coach.
The 37-year-old Genever is now the personal coach of national players Mohd Azlan Iskandar and Mohd Nafiizwan Adnan in London.
National Sports Council (NSC) director general Datuk Zolkples Embong said he was happy that Genever is keen to become the national elite coach.
He approached, saying he is willing to coach the national players. He has vast experience as a coach and the national players will definitely benefit training under him, said Zolkples.
Azlan and Nafiizwan have progressed under his guidance. If he comes here he will be able to train more players, like Kamran (Khan), Ivan (Yuen) and the other elite players.
Azlan and Nafiizwan are now training under him in London. But if we hire him, we will be able to save money and time, said Zolkples.
National No. 1 Azlan has been training under former professional Genever for the last five years.
Azlan has certainly improved under his guidance, improving his world ranking to No. 10 this year.
The Kuching-born Azlan has also won Professional Squash Association (PSA) titles, bagged the Asian crown twice, captured the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games gold medal and become the first Malaysian and Asian player to finish fourth in the individual event at the 2010 New Delhi Common-wealth Games.
Nafiizwan too has made tremendous progress under the Englishan, climbing to 36th in the world ranking.
Zolkples also hopes to see the other national and back-up players improving their game and rankings in the world under Genevers tutelage.
We already have a mutual understanding with Genever ... we are now negotiating the terms and conditions, said Zolkples.
We also heard that he has an offer from another country.
Meanwhile, the 29-year-old Azlan was excited to learn that Genever is close to becoming the national coach.
He is an excellent coach and Ive made big progress under him. The other players here will definitely benefit from training under him, said Azlan.
