Life Lessons At the Lemonade Stand

Last weekend, I learned three significant life lessons when my kids set up a lemonade stand. Looking at the big picture, these are fundamental life lessons that everyone should take into account, especially if they are running a home based business.

1. Attraction Marketing is the Foundation for Building Relationships and Growing Any Business.

People do business with people, not companies. This concept comes naturally for kids because they are always their own genuine selves. But adults tend to focus on money first, which is detrimental to longterm sustainability. My kids made $12 selling 10 cups of 25cent lemonade. People did business with them, and more, because they liked them. They did not go door to door selling their stuff. Keep this principal is mind while you are building your own home based business... be yourself, be genuine, and build relationships. Particularly if you are using the internet which can be very impersonal. Having your own blog or website is the best way to build relationships online by far. And be careful about promoting other people's systems first. Promoting systems is okay if you do it on the back end, but leading with your own unique self is what is most powerful long-term.

2. Learn to Drive Traffic and Get In Front of Your Target Market.

The second lesson was an obvious one in driving traffic. Our house is on a very quiet street and the only traffic that goes by are our neighbours. My kids were definitely not getting in front of their target market, who were mostly at the beach that day. Luckily our neighbours were thirsty. As a home business owner, if you learn how to get in front of your target market online, by focusing on one marketing strategy at a time and mastering them as you move forward, you will have traffic coming through your 'doors' all day. The key is simply to get educated on how to drive traffic. Get in front of people who already want what you have, and business will happen organically.

3. Have Fun

Although the lemonade stand was quiet, my kids thoroughly enjoyed themselves. They read books and talked to people, played in the yard and generally just had fun. If you enjoy what you do, you will never work another day in your life. Think back to your own childhood and what made you happy. We are all born with unique qualities and special talents, and when you follow your heart, you will find happiness. Make sure, above all, that the business you are in is one that makes your heart sing as well as your pocketbook fat. And when you have fun, people are attracted to you, and business grows.

So get out there in a way that only you can do, have fun and market like crazy.
